Many people approach mattress shopping in a bias manner. You either sleep on a memory foam mattress, or a spring mattress. Unbeknown to the customers, there are benefits and disadvantages of both types. Sleep is a subjective topic, and sleep surface preferences are individualized per customer. While some may prefer a soft sleeping surface, others might go for a firmer option. It is important that people know their personal preferences, along with background knowledge of both types of mattresses, before they make a final decision on their purchase.
Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam mattresses are relatively new to society. It was discovered in the 1970’s by scientists that were making material for NASA airplane seats. The foam is composed of a visco-elastic material that is energy absorbent and soft. This material allows the mattress to conform to the body in response to heat and pressure. When the pressure is taken off the mattress, it will return to its original shape.
Body temperature contributes to a memory foam mattresses reaction by having the heat from a body soften the surface at appropriate points. This factor allows the mattress to support all of the curves and natural lines of a body, which, in turn, will relieve painful pressure points. Those with achy joints and pack problems will likely find foam mattresses helpful in relieving chronic pain. Although foam mattresses can contribute to one’s health, they can only do so to a certain extent. Back and joint pain benefit the most from the foam mattress, but those with sleep apnea or breathing disorders should stray away from this option.
Because of its high absorbency this mattress also tends to retain body heat, which can be incredibly beneficial in cooler weather. However, in warmer weather it can seem uncomfortable for some. Another downfall from the high absorbency is that it is makes it somewhat difficult to move around. Foam mattresses are not for active sleepers, they are so soft that a body essentially sinks into it.
Spring mattresses have been relevant a lot longer than memory foam. They are often associated with a bad rep because they are not as supportive as memory foam mattresses. However, spring mattresses have evolved throughout the years to prove otherwise. Although they are a lot more firm than memory foam, some might actually prefer this type of sleeping surface.
Inside of a spring mattress are multiple coils that are used to support your body. It is these coils that contribute to the firmness that is associated with the spring mattresses. Also, the amount of coils are what determine the quality and effectiveness of the mattress. The stiffness of these mattresses will make them low maintenance, whereas a foam mattress has to be rotated every three months to reduce deterioration.
If a spring mattress does not have many coils, then the support will be uneven. Back pain is often associated with uneven support, which is something to take into consideration. When purchasing a spring mattress, the cheaper options are not always the best ideas, because that usually means they have few coils. If a firm mattress is not what is desired, or if a customer is looking to treat their back pain, then a spring mattress is more than likely not the right choice.
The Better Mattress
Truthfully, there is no better mattress. Sleeping surfaces depend on individual preferences, and there are no standards. A customer must take their personal preferences into account when it comes to purchasing a new mattress. Hard or soft? Warm or cool? Spring or foam? Once these determining factors are figured out, then the path to the right mattress, not the better mattress, is formed.
